Our first house was a little one, which was good for us at the time because my husband and I were just getting started on our life path together at the time. But within a few of years, we were expecting our first child, and a few years later, we learned that we were expecting another child. We took advantage of the first available chance to relocate to a larger home. In fact, we really like it—except for all of the empty wall space! I also enjoy creative projects, so I see every blank wall as an opportunity to create something new.

I came across a great concept for transforming a shower curtain into wall art the other week.

Step 1: Materials Required

Colored paper/Origami paper is available. Scissors Double-sided tape and one-sided tape are both acceptable.

Step 2:

15cm x 15cm was the size I picked. If you’re going to use colored paper, make sure you have some square paper. It’s simple: fold two diagonally opposed sides in half and check that a tidy triangle is produced before cutting the remaining half.

Step 3:

Make a “X” on the other side by folding it diagonally as well.

Step 4:

Similarly, fold the opposite side diagonally to form a “X.”

Step 5:

Fold the opposite side diagonally as well in order to form a “X” shape.

Step 6:

Fold the paper along the horizontal line. On the right side, push from the top side diagonally to the designated end (halfway) (halfway)

Step 7:

From the top, this is how it will seem at this point. Make a right angled triangle by pushing the edge all the way within the triangle.

Step 8:

Repeat the process on the opposite side.

Step 9:

Fold the triangles in half. Make a cut along the bottom edge, following the highlighted line (a small curve)

Step 10:

Open it up and fold the curved edge along the green line all the way up to the top of the page.

Step 11:

Repeat the process on the other side to make a heart.

Step 12:

Now, flip it over to the other side.

Step 13:

Now, flip it over and see how it looks on the inside.

Step 14:

Now, bend the triangle on top of the triangle and attach the top wings together by folding in between.

Step 15:

After folding, pinch the center section of the middle piece from the outside.

Step 16:

Once folded in half, pinch the central section from the outside.

Step 17:

I painted them in a spectrum of colors and taped them on the wall with masking tape. Believe me when I say that it looks much better in real than it does in the picture:) It is time to create a large flower in the vicinity of the butterflies. Receiving home décor catalogs in the mail from businesses that I admire is a treat for me. They are an excellent (and completely FREE) source of inspiration! Being an acheapahemfrugalshopper means that I have a difficult time picking which items I want to spend my décor money on and which items I want to DIY at times. ( In the back of my mind, there is always a small voice that says, “Could I create it for a lot less?” whenever I see something. The majority of the time, the response is affirmative!

Annie Selke- Lots of Happy Colors

The same thing happened when I saw the cover of an Annie Selke catalog for the spring 2020 collection. The butterfly painting over the mantle was a bright and cheery piece of work. I opened open the cover to check how much the artwork cost (my head was already thinking “that’s a more expensive catalog, perhaps $300”- nope, it wasn’t that pricey.) This piece of equipment cost $785!) Don’t get me wrong, it’s really gorgeous. However, the majority of us do not have a budget of roughly $800 to spend on a single photograph.

When I saw this, my tiny head started spinning, and that ever-present voice began to question, “Could I produce it for less?” (Umm.oh, huh.) – Art at the Palace of Versailles might have been created for less money by even Louis XIV’s designer).

Materials You Need to Make Butterfly Art

  • Butterfly paper punch
  • Bright cardstock
  • Double-sided tape (I used this permanent type and it’s holding up wonderfully! )
  • Board painted white or canvas (I just used a piece of MDF that I had leftover from another project and it worked perfectly! ). If I had been purchasing anything expressly for this project, I may have gone a little bit higher end!)
  • And

Star of This Project

Butterfly paper punch; bright cardstock; double-sided tape (I used this permanent type and it’s holding up wonderfully! ); board painted white or canvas (I just used a piece of MDF that I had leftover from another project and it worked perfectly!). Perhaps if I were purchasing anything expressly for this endeavor, I would have spent more money!);

How to Make Your Butterfly Wall Art

  1. First and foremost, you will need to punch out a large number of butterflies. Due to the fact that this is a 3D picture, wherever you see a butterfly, it is really made up of two pieces: one that serves as the foundation and another that has been folded to give the appearance that its wings are “flying.” My finished image has around 60 butterflies on it (so 120 punched butterflies). **Did I mention that I HIGHLY recommend using a punch for this rather than attempting to cut all of these out by hand? **)
  2. I discovered that sorting my butterflies by color worked best for me. The wings may be made 3D by simply folding each wing inwards toward the center. As you can see, there’s an in-between portion down the middle of the butterfly, which I just folded up to
  3. Use your double-sided tape to attach the two butterflies together (make sure they are two of the same color)
  4. I used a bowl to form a circular to mimic the original art’s appearance. (I just placed it on my board and then removed it after I had a few of rows of the design finalized.) Mr. PearTreeHome came in while I was working and inquired as to whether or not I intended to keep the bowl in that position. umm… No. a wink
  5. Once you have your butterflies arranged in the manner in which you choose, just fix them with the same permanent double-sided tape described before. Mine have been up for three weeks and have not budged in the slightest! I’ll keep you informed if that situation changes! )

How to Hang

In light of the fact that I utilized tape to adhere all of the butterflies to our board, you can probably anticipate that I will use something similar to hang our completed creation. You would be absolutely correct! I hung them with 3M velcro Command Hooks, which are among of my favorites. Seriously, they are a mother’s best friend. When is the last time you had a free pair of hands to put anything up? When your children are sound asleep. Who wants to make a mess of something like that by pounding it.

I used four of the big strips to hang my painting, but make sure to read and follow the instructions carefully!

The White Morpho butterfly, with its angelic and beautiful appearance, is unusual and royal. The wings of this butterfly are rather wide and dignified, which is especially noticeable when this beauty is fluttering from bloom to flower on the air. The artist brings this to life by making the body of the creature smaller in proportion to the wings. The upper wings are embellished with capiz shell, which gives it the transparent tint that is found in the genuine butterfly’s top wings. The lower wings are made of tin, and the colors used to decorate them assist to draw attention to the vein structures.

Tin is used to construct the insect’s basic structure, which is then powder coated with a black finish to give it a sleek appearance.

Capiz is an oyster shell, and the oyster’s principal function is to provide food for other organisms.

Given the fact that it is a natural material, the natural colors of the capiz show through as tans and browns beneath the layers of painting.

After then, the shell is painted in the vibrant hues you see here. The entire front-facing piece is meticulously hand-painted, with special attention paid to the reflected properties of the colors of insects and their surroundings.
