My white slipcovers have survived two kids and numerous large dogs that have claimed their right to lay on the sofa, so don’t be scared to give them a try!

If you know how to sew, you can construct simpleenvelope-style slipcovers for your pillows that you can swap out whenever you want to update your decor.

I adore the aesthetic of white (and occasionally gray) furniture, and I believe that it brightens a space and makes your décor more adaptable in its application.

This allows me to change the look of my décor without having to repaint the chairs.

I enjoy placing lamps in unexpected locations, such as on the counter in my bathroom, on the shelves in my laundry room, in the closet, and on the kitchen counter, to name a few.

Plug-in wall sconces are also available on occasion, and they are ideal for use over sinks, workstations, and above kitchen countertops, among other places.

Make a statement by hanging them over a reading chair, a sink, or a desk for an immediate dose of glitz.


Your belongings will be damaged if you move frequently; this is true regardless of how carefully you supervise your packers and movers.

That might explain why, throughout the years, my design instincts have evolved to the point that adjectives like chippy, old, industrial, distressed, rusty, and the like have become some of my favorite decorating phrases.

The only items I am adamant about preserving until my husband retires from the military and we have settled (knock on wood) in one location are my late mother’s piano and a stained glass window from the church where my parents were married.

Everything else is wonderful, but I refuse to lose sleep over it every two years when everything is loaded into the huge truck and driven away.

9.Be prepared to store items, but avoid hoarding them.

I purge items that I didn’t want to deal with unpacking on the back end of our move on the front end of our relocation.

One piece of advice: One immutable rule of moving is that two houses, even if they have the exact same square footage, will not contain the same amount of furniture when arranged in the exact same way.

For years, I would purge everything that didn’t function well in this specific home, only to find myself repurchasing the identical item when I needed it in a different home a short time later.

Last year, I worked hard at finding the balance between retaining items I needed, loved, and would use again and without ending up on an episode of Hoarders. I was successful in some ways, but not all. My general rules are as follows:

  • When I pack up after the holidays, I donate any holiday decorations that haven’t been utilized in the previous two years (although sometimes they get the chop after one year). If we’re going to be living in the Deep South for a few years, it’s OK to keep my sweaters
  • However, if I haven’t worn a piece of seasonal apparel in my wardrobe in a year, it’s out of the house. My children are allowed to keep a few boxes of “memories” that we transport all over the country with no questions asked. “Normal” people have basements, attics, garages, and other storage spaces and are not required to throw away their childhood
  • My children should be permitted to do the same. If your house doesn’t have enough storage, it’s okay to rent a storage unit (but only if it fits in your house and you can still park your cars in the garage).However, our current home doesn’t have a basement, attic storage, or linen closets.When this happens, I call an audible and we’re allowed to rent a storage unit or hubby can park in the driveway.See, I’m flexible
  • I’m not a stickler for rules.

10. Don’t get too worked up over the minor details. In the end, you’re most likely only going to be here for a short period of time, and you won’t be able to transform it into your dream home in a matter of years. After all, it isn’t your home, so why would you want to? So, my final piece of advise is to do everything you can to make your property seem like a residence. Spend some time and money to make your home uniquely yours, but just for as long as it brings you delight to be in it. Relax after that and take comfort in the knowledge that if your hot water heater fails (like mine did this afternoon), you can simply pick up the phone and contact someone to repair it.
