Interior Design Style Quiz FAQs

Many individuals can identify what they enjoy (and don’t like) when they see it, but they have difficulty describing exactly what it is that they like about something. The Modsy interior design style quiz, on the other hand, was built with this precise problem in mind. Therefore, rather than a series of questions, our quiz relies on images to determine your personality (we will never ask you about your perfect vacation or what your ideal pet would be). Nothing more than looking at a few photographs and telling us which ones you like and dislike is required of you.

For example, you may enjoy Mid-Century Modern couches but also appreciate industrial elements such as raw wood, metal, and stone.

How long does the Modsy style quiz take?

It won’t be long! The quiz will take between 2 and 6 minutes to complete, depending on how much time you spend debating over the photos you are presented with. We do, however, advocate not overthinking anything and instead following your instincts! It will provide you with higher results—as well as allow you to save time on the quiz.

Can the quiz combine different design styles?

Definitely! A common request we receive from clients is that they want to customize their home alongside a roommate or significant other. And that necessitates the fusion of design styles! With our style questionnaire, you and your partner may go at the photographs together and determine what you both like and dislike. We’ll look at how your styles contrast with one another and create a one-of-a-kind solution that seamlessly integrates the two together in a fashionable manner.

What are the most popular home decor styles?

Definitely! Customers who want to create their home with a roommate or significant other come to us all the time! Design styles must be combined, which implies blending them together. Our style questionnaire allows you and your partner to go through the photographs and establish your mutual preferences. After evaluating your respective styles, we’ll produce an original solution that seamlessly and stylishly combines them both together.

How many interior design styles are there?

A practically endless number of design styles exist due to the numerous ways in which fundamental styles may be mixed and matched to create a totally unique look for each individual. In the world of interior design, we prefer to think in terms of “pure styles,” which are the fundamental styles that are at the center of all interior design. What are these “pure styles” you speak of? Mid-Century Modern, Minimalist, Contemporary, Industrial, Hollywood Glam, Eclectic or Boho, Rustic, Classic Formal, and Traditional are some of the design styles you’ll find in this collection.

More information on these designs, as well as their history, can be found in our blog post that delves into the world of prominent interior design styles.

Given that I used to work for Havenly, the company will always hold a particular place in my hearts. My general style choices were extremely closely matched by their results, which I have to admit. What’s My Home Decorating Style? Quiz and Design Tips

A spot in your house that requires care, or are you ready to embark on a new DIY home renovation project? One thing to consider before you get started is if you’ve selected which home décor style best suits your home and your personality. “How about you tell me about your design style?” you inquire. Take the quick and entertaining quiz below to find out whether you got the right answer. By answering our ten questions, you’ll be able to give a name to your ideal home’s interior design. The question of whether my home’s interior design style is more Mid-Century Modern or Industrial will be answered.

With a little home design inspiration, you can begin the wheels of your home design project turning.

3 rules to follow when decorating with your home design style in mind:

Now that you’ve figured out what your house’s style is, thanks to our interior design quiz, here are our three most important principles for acing DIY home designing.

Your house may be made to seem like it was designed by a professional designer – without spending a lot of money!

Rule1: Know your design style by heart.

Because, let’s face it, certain interior design trends are difficult to distinguish from one another (hello, Minimalist and Scandinavian!). So, how can you ensure that the design you’re attempting to copy is a true reflection of your personal style?

Step 1: Start with a home aesthetic quiz.

Start with our What’s My Decorating Style? quiz to determine your own style. It’s quick, it’s all visual, and it’s entertaining to do. You might be shocked to find that the style that you ultimately choose (and that actually suits you) is significantly different from what you had in mind all along! It will also provide you with the design vocabulary you need to narrow down your search. When searching for home décor items, you may use keywords such as “industrial,” “coastal,” or “boho” to narrow down your search and discover the right match for your house!

Step 2: Take a good look at your space.

Once you’ve nailed down your own style, the next crucial step is to examine your living environment. Is a complete overhaul on the horizon? You may just require a few items to complete your look, or you may require more. Which aspects of your house are providing you with the most benefit, and which ones are not? How essential do you think it is for your home to have a lot of natural light? Is it necessary to use artificial light? The ability to maintain an open mind and a flexible viewpoint will make it simpler for you to comprehend what suits you and will keep you satisfied in the long run.

Step 3: Get inspired.

Oh, this is definitely one of our favorite steps of the whole thing. Consider taking a step back and allowing the creative energy to flow naturally. You may get home décor inspiration on websites such as Pinterest, in your favorite home decor magazines, and even in movies or television programs. Also, take inspiration from the surroundings. Take a look about you. Inspiration from real-life, lived-in spaces is a terrific method to imagine how your room may appear if it had a similar layout or design features as the inspiration area.

When you come across fixtures, furnishings, or artwork that you like in someone else’s house, ask them for advice.

Rule2: Follow the 3 C’s: choose, consider, curate.

The second must-follow guideline of DIY interior design is to pick your pieces thoughtfully, take into consideration the specifics of your area, and curate to bring in positive sensations. First and foremost, select style components and accessories that you envision yourself (and your family) utilizing and loving in the long term. As much as we would like our space to be a reflection of our own style, practicality and utility are still important factors in creating a livable and pleasant house.

It’s simple to find everything and everything that reflects your personal style online.

Consider the quantity of light that comes into your room at all times of the day, and pick paint colors and lighting that will help to brighten the space.

Last but not least, tailor your home’s appearance by just bringing in items that make you feel good inside.

Clutter never makes a guy happier — and this is a philosophy that we adhere to as well. If you want to create a room that is genuinely unique, go light on the accessorizing. Trust us when we say that it’s best to gradually include things one at a time rather than having an overly decorated area.

Rule3: Promise to work within your set budget.

Our final criterion is where the majority of do-it-yourself designers fail. When the subject of a budget is brought up, some people find that the euphoria of imagining their dream house design quickly fades away. Working within your budget, on the other hand, should not be viewed as a source of fear or as a means of stifling your creative potential. Follow these steps to stay inside your budget while still enjoying your ideal home decor:

Reuse items that you already have.

It’s possible that you already have everything you need. Sort each thing you presently own into categories and determine whether or not it still fulfills its original purpose and complements your desired look. Do you have any products in your possession that have an altogether different aesthetic from the one you’re attempting to achieve? Organize a yard sale to raise more income, or give the proceeds to a local charity.

Dive into a garage sale or a secondhand store.

It’s possible that someone else’s unwanted stuff will turn out to be your treasure. Each of these institutions is an amalgam of every single style, both old and new, and might easily become an easy source of diversion. So keep your gaze fixed on the prize.

Focus on mixing rather than matching.

Purchasing large-ticket products in one transaction, such as a furniture set, may appear to be a convenient method to obtain what you need all at once. However, it may result in your money being depleted more quickly and your capacity to completely personalize your home being limited. In order to design like a true professional, you should not be scared to mix and match your items – particularly your furniture. Maintain a single focus point and use complementary accessories.

Try your hand at DIY-ing your home pieces.

With a little effort and elbow grease, you can recreate interior design trends such as Shabby Chic and Industrial, among others, by using pieces that have been lived in for a while. DIY allows you to express your individuality and produce unique design elements that you won’t be able to find anyplace else.

Does Knowing Your Style Matter?

Both yes and no. Your own style should be irrelevant to everyone else but you. However, it should be a representation of your personality. So, does it make a difference if you know your own personal style? Yes. Yes, it does. The reason behind this is as follows.

Shopping Will Be Easier

You’ve probably had the feeling of walking into a large department store and being overwhelmed by the racks of apparel that take up numerous levels. But then you discover that everything’s organized by department, which makes it much simpler to find exactly what you’re looking for. And then it’s narrowed down even more by size (although, recently, I’ve been unhappy with the size I’m buying.but that’s another story.). Knowing your design style can help you narrow down your options. In a furniture store, you won’t have to look at every sofa because you’ll already know the model of sofa you want!

  • Decorating Paralysis, as I like to refer to it, is one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome when it comes to home decorating.

Does Everyone Have JustOneStyle?

No way, not at all! In the same way that every individual has subtleties to their personality, your design style will have nuances as well. Your design style will develop over time as a result of your life experiences, current design trends, stage of life, and other factors. As a result, what you pick now may be different from what you would have chosen 10 years ago, or even what you would choose in 2 years! A variety of styles can be used in conjunction with one another to create a cohesive look.

Traditional and Rustic, for example, can coexist peacefully while not being called Eclectic in any way.

Is it possible that I’m missing your style?

How to Find Your Interior Design Style

As designers, we understand how difficult it can be to choose just one certain style that calls to us when there are so many gorgeous spaces sprouting up everywhere (on social media, in design books, and even on our favorite television series). Nonetheless, when it comes to building your own house, it’s critical to have an understanding of what you enjoy and don’t like the most so that you can devote your time and resources to creating a space that will actually make you happy in the long run.

Here, five professionals provide their suggestions on where to go for inspiration and how to filter down what does and does not make your heart sing—and, best of all, you can simply start this process right now.

Take a Peek in Your Closet

Seriously, go ahead and do it—just don’t be sidetracked by those sparkly shoes (who knows, they could disclose something about your ideal house after all!). According to designerEugenia Triandos, you should “take a glance around at your favorite items and note what colors, textures, and patterns you gravitate toward.” Design consultant Louis Duncan-Hesays suggests that you take into consideration the following: “Can you tell me about the portions that you appear to be repeating? What are some of your favorite or special occasion outfits that you keep on hand for those special occasions?

” Triandos recommends that you take note of the different sorts of materials you have on hand as well. It is possible to incorporate this inclination into your house through the use of draperies and cushions, she continues. Ashley Montgomery Design is a firm that specializes in interior design.

Look to Your Favorite Icons

Allow yourself to totally embrace your celebrity passion for a little moment. Duncan-He encourages people to think about the icon that they can’t seem to get enough of. According to him, “most of the time, in addition to their physical characteristics, there is an overall sense or energy that draws you in.” “Make an effort to figure out what that general sensation is, and you’ll almost always receive some further suggestions as to the overall sort of energy you want to produce in an interior area.” Duncan-He urges his own clients to visualize what their celebrity role model’s home might appear like in their own imagination.

“In most cases, they are able to explain with greater precision the design sensibility of that home, which then frequently results in the identification of stylistic synergies between that home and the one they want to build for themselves,” he says.

Expand Your Perspective

When it comes to design, traveling to a new location, even if it is just digitally, may present you with new insights. “There’s nothing quite like traveling and taking in all of the beauty of a new area,” designer Sascha LaFleur says of her travel experiences. My designs are heavily influenced by the locations I’ve visited or dream of visiting, and I strive to reflect the essence of those places in each piece.” A story about where you have been or where you want to go should be told via your home design.

When it comes to your sense of design, a little advance planning may help you get the most out of your experience.

Create a Moodboard

Remember how much fun it was to make collages out of magazine clippings when you were a kid? Perhaps you should revisit this practice and see what kinds of photos you find most appealing this time. According to designerDiana Roseshares, “I normally give my customers a challenge to collect as many inspiring photographs as they possibly can from all sorts of areas” such as “art, travel,” “nature,” “fashion, jewelry,” “movies,” “interiors,” and “history” and put them into a large vision board. Rose then asks her clients which aspects of each image they find the most appealing.

This assists Rose in seeing trends and determining the best way to ascertain a client’s personal style.

Get Digital

You may, of course, make a moodboard on the internet as well. According to designer Shawna Percival, “When working with clients who are unsure about their style, we advise them to get on Pinterest and establish a board called ‘Rooms that Feel Good.'” Percival emphasizes the importance of the language used here. It’s common to see a pattern emerge when people freely acquire rooms that make them feel good rather than being obsessed on a certain feature of the space, according to Sherry. Once design consistency is established—perhaps you have a penchant for plants or white sofas—we may develop a design idea that is based on these consistent choices.

It’s common for us to focus on minute details while searching through inspiration photographs rather than taking in the overall area, he says.

According to him, “it should be visceral: you should either enjoy the room or loathe the room.” It should either put you at rest and make you feel wonderful, or it should make you feel the opposite.

The fact that you have to hesitate to make a decision means you do not enjoy the room and it is time to go on.”

1. Pin with Reckless Abandon

Architectural firm Barnes Vanze & Associates, Inc. Despite the fact that I do not spend a lot of time on Pinterest, I do so when I am seeking to create a new area. It’s not something I take too seriously. I search for “mater bedroom” or whatever it is that I am searching for and pin anything that gets my attention. The key is to avoid overthinking things or picking apart the area too much. If it elicits a response from you and draws you in, pin it. When it came time to create our pantry, I went ahead and did exactly that.

Once you’ve pinned for a few of weeks and come back to the board, you’ll notice that there are some commonalities.

Gray cabinets, as well as warm tones, were prevalent in nearly all of my pins.

It’s actually a lot of fun to go through the procedure.

2. Consider Your Personality

Do you like to play it safe or do you prefer to take chances? For the reason that you may choose a more neutral design that is simple to look at for an extended amount of time if you are not willing to take any risks, I pose this question. Going large or brave can undoubtedly pay off, but it will not sit well with you if you are not comfortable with upsetting the apple cart too often. While it may be enjoyable to be pushed beyond of your comfort zone, your house should provide you with the greatest amount of comfort, thus understanding your personality is essential.

3. Tour Model Homes

When I posted this picture of my house on Stories and the blog, you all went crazy. Model houses are one of my favorite things to see. It’s something I’ve done since I was a child. My parents would arrange for us to accompany them, and I would race from room to room, envisioning which one would be my own space. Looking at model homes, on the other hand, may be really beneficial. If you come into a store and are instantly put off by the style, it is probable that you are not a good fit for that particular style.

If you come into a room and your shoulders relax and you want to remain for a while, snap a few pictures! You’re on to something, I believe. Something doesn’t feel quite right to you. It’s unlikely that the entire home would be affected, but even if just one room has an influence, make a note of it.

4. Shop Your Own Home

Table|chairs|chandelier By now, most of you are familiar with the tale, but this table was one of the first things we bought together after getting married. You can view the entire reveal of our breakfast nook here. Please don’t give up on anything that may be there in front of your face. It’s possible that you have furniture in your home right now that only needs to be refreshed. The lines of this table were quite appealing to us. We adored the classic look it possessed. The finish was a little shabby, so we gave it a fresh coat of paint and it looks like a completely different table now.

5. Don’t Talk Yourself Into It

Ever. Just don’t do it. It’s similar like wearing a dress or a pair of shoes. In the event that I get a new dress and do not reach for it inside the first couple of days, this indicates that I do not truly enjoy it. The same may be said about design. Something that you don’t immediately fall in love with or bring into your house is unlikely to be loved at all. I’ve been there myself. If it is, in fact, your style, you should be a fan from the beginning of the process. Now, I understand that some of you may disagree and argue that things can grow on you with time.

6. Visit High End Stores

If you live in Dallas, you are in for a real treat! Caitlin Wilson only launched her business yesterday night, according to her Facebook page. It is critical to develop your design intuition. When you wander around high-end stores (even if you have no intention of making a purchase), you are doing research. Items that appeal to you will be on exhibit, as will displays that pique your interest and colors that make you happy. You’ll be able to discover which pieces of furniture make you feel most at ease.

Lighting, in my opinion, is always a good spot to do this.

7. Flip Through Magazines

Yes, those were the old-fashioned mags. Remove pages from your book that you find yourself returning to. Place them in a folder for safekeeping. Just as when you pin photos, you’ll begin to see what it is that you are drawn to. It also allows you to see how places may be designed if you are not particularly gifted in this area.

8. Avoid Trends

Look, we’re all susceptible to being sucked into the latest craze or fashionable trend. That’s fine and dandy if you absolutely adore it. If you don’t care for shiplap, even if it’s all over the place, don’t use it in your home. It’s as easy as that. Despite the fact that fashion comes and goes, one thing I’ve learned is that sticking to what you like is far more satisfying than following the latest fashion trend, even if it doesn’t get you on the cover of a home magazine.

What does it matter? If you embrace what you enjoy, it will not rapidly become out of fashion for you and your family. If something is currently popular yet you are enthusiastic about it, go ahead and do it. You’ll continue to appreciate your design even after the current fashion has faded away.

9. Think About Friends’ Homes

This is the magnificent home that my sister has built for herself. I like each and every room in her house, and her home is a constant source of inspiration for me. Consider the residences of your acquaintances. Not in a condescending manner, but just to observe what draws you in and makes you want to remain a while longer. Alternatively, you may choose to leave. Is there a place in your house that you look forward to entering every day? If this is the case, take note of their fashion sense.

10. Try Things Out

The vast majority of retailers provide generous return policies. Purchase that coffee table you’ve been eyeing and experiment with it in your room. Sometimes the only way to find out is to give it a go yourself. Check it out and see if you like it. If it doesn’t work, try again. I’ve bought a number of goods home from HomeGoods just to discover that they didn’t exactly perform as intended. But it’s all right. Every step is necessary in the process.

11. Scroll Through Your Favorite Blogs

Blogs provide a large volume of high-quality information. Consider a few of your favorite bloggers and pay a visit to their respective blogs. What is it about them that you like? Is it because of the colors? What about the design? What is the purpose of pattern? You already know how much I admire Studio McGee, and this mudroom is no exception. In their creations, I constantly find something to be inspired by. A great deal of inspiration may be found from my DIY Playbook gals as well. I really like the way they keep things simple and uncomplicated.

12. Visit the Anchor Stores

Do you have a Pottery Barn or a West Elm store in your neighborhood? Grab a cup of coffee and take a stroll to pass the time. Shop around and observe which stores entice you to spend more time there. Start to notice whether you’re drawn to mid-century modern design, classic design, or something else else. Take photographs of vignettes that you find appealing.

13. Pay Attention to Restaurants You Frequent

Coastal Kitchen, located in Dana Point, California, features a very beachy and relaxed atmosphere. It’s a complete contrast to the atmosphere at Nick’s in nearby San Clemente. Restaurants are intentionally constructed to elicit a certain feeling. It’s possible that you’ll prefer one over the other depending on your preferences. Don’t underestimate the importance of your neighborhood coffee shop. Ellie’s Table is conveniently located nearby, and I adore everything about the interior décor. In fact, there are some striking parallels between our newly constructed pantry and the one in our previous home.

14. Would You Pay Full Price?

In Dana Point, California, the Coastal Kitchen has a laid-back, beachy ambiance that is sure to please. Everything about the atmosphere at Nick’s in San Clemente is very different. In order to create a vibe, restaurants are specially created. If you choose one over the other, you may discover that you are more comfortable in that environment.

The neighborhood coffee shop should not be underestimated. Ellie’s Table is a restaurant in our neighborhood, and I adore everything about it. There are some striking parallels between our freshly constructed pantry and the one we had before.

15. Save Photos on IG to Folders

This is one of my all-time favorite methods of keeping track of sources of inspiration. When I first saw this image from The Pink Dream, I immediately saved it on my computer. After I’d gotten my jaw back up off the floor, that is. If you’re new to Instagram and don’t know how to organize your photos into folders, this video will help you out. I save a spot as soon as it catches my attention and I have the opportunity. When I go back through the gallery, I see that everything is done in the same way.

16. Envision Your Dream Room

Take a deep breath and close your eyes as you try to visualize your ideal bedroom. Some people will find this practice simple, while others may find it tough. If you are able to do so, make a note of what you observe. What colors do you want? What kind of furniture is it, and so forth. Another method for gaining an understanding of what determines your personal style.

17. What Are Your Family’s Needs?

More of this donut celebration please! This is something that just cannot be ignored. It’s possible that you adore marble and see it everywhere, but you also have four children and host a weekly pasta night at your residence. It is quite unlikely that this specimen will be used for marble. It’s not that you can’t, but let’s be realistic here. You must be aware of the way your family lives. I usually remark that my family has a difficult life. And that is exactly what we do. The children were educated from an early age to respect our property, not to eat on the sofa, and other such lessons.

  1. That is something we appreciate.
  2. We have no qualms about getting scrapes and dents.
  3. So be aware of what your family need.
  4. If that’s the case, I’m really envious.

18. Hit up the Library

We’ll have more of this doughnut celebration. This is a situation that cannot be disregarded under any circumstances. Although you may like marble and see it everywhere, you may also have four children and hold a weekly pasta night at your residence. A contender for marble, most likely not. No one is saying you can’t, but let’s face it: it’s not going to happen! The way your family lives is important for you to understand. In my family, we work really hard. This is something I often emphasize.

We instilled in our children from an early age a regard for our property, a refusal to dine on the couch, and other such lessons.

That is something we welcome.

Scratches and dings aren’t anything we fear. It adds to the charm of this house. So be aware of the requirements of your household. A white sofa could be the best option for you. If that’s the case, I’m really envious of you! Let me put it this way:

19. Engage in Pillow Talk

Bring a companion who has a keen sense of design with you to HomeGoods. Inquire if she can assist you! She can put together a few of pillow combinations to get a sense of what colors and patterns you like and don’t like to begin with. Take her out to lunch and take pleasure in your time together. have a look around this room

20. Hire Someone (after 1-19)

Bringing in a professional might be beneficial if you are still having trouble putting things together on your own. They have the ability to bring your ideas to life in a stunning manner. From time to time, I hear stories about friends who were dissatisfied with the final outcome. I believe that part of the problem is that you really need to complete your assignment first. If you perform some of these activities to get a sense of your own personal style, you’ll be more prepared to make selections when faced with a variety of possibilities.

I hope this list has provided you with some viable avenues for beginning your exploration of what it is about design that actually interests you.
