With its emphasis on interior architecture and design, the Major in Interior Architecture and Design exemplifies the definition of a professional designer who is qualified by education, experience, and examination to design interior environments that improve the function and quality of life of people while also protecting their health, safety, and welfare as a whole. Academic preparation is centered on research-based problem solving and experiential education, which is provided through studio teaching, service learning, and internships that take into consideration a range of cultural, environmental, and historical perspectives, among others.

Teaching and learning are important to faculty in the Interior Architecture and Design program. They see learning as a collaborative effort that encourages diversity, design research as a foundation for excellence in design practice, and innovative learning models that respond to new ways of working.

Researchers assist students in problem-solving activities, allowing them to make a smooth transition from school to practice in a global society.

During their time at the Interior Architecture and Design program, students will learn the entire design process, from the assessment of client needs through design programming, development of alternative design solutions, development of conceptual and theoretical frameworks, selection of furnishings and finishing materials and contract administration (including project management and post-occupancy evaluation methodologies) to completion of their degree.

Additional course work includes construction/building systems and codes, business principles in interior architecture and design, computer-aided design and drafting, BIM (Building Information Modeling), animation, multimedia, graphic visualization, history of architecture and interiors, and sustainable practices, among other topics.

Design studios and critique spaces, a gallery, a design materials library, virtual reality computer laboratories, and fabrication labs are among the resources available for students to use (prototyping, woods, metals,screen printing).

Critical and creative thinking, communication, ethics, social responsibility and sustainability, and multidisciplinary cooperation are some of the processes that are involved. Individual attributes of professionalism and business practices will be identified and demonstrated by students, and the value of their expertise in the interior built environment sector will be advanced as a result. A minimum of one semester before graduation, students will enroll in Internships credits. Participants in co-curricular learning experiences will have the opportunity to network with industry professionals, participate in project-based learning experiences, assist with department recruiting events and new student orientations, and participate in a variety of leadership events, among other opportunities.

Potential Occupations

It is expected that students will be prepared to practice interior architecture/interior design after completing this program. Students will have competency in design fundamentals as well as space planning and programming, code compliance, lighting, materials research, project management, and professional practices as they design a variety of interior spaces. Prior to progressing to the next studio course, all majors in the program must receive a minimum grade of C (2.000) in the preceding studio course (i.e.,INTD 210,INTD 276,INTD 310,INTD 376,INTD 410).

  • Students who qualify for the Selective Advancement Design Scenario must have completed INTD 110, INTD 129, and INTD 166, as well as a total reported GPA of at least 2.500.
  • The IARD-BS major is a cohort program; once students have passed the Design Scenario, they will proceed to the following semesters: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
  • Prior to graduation, students must complete a 12-credit internship experience.
  • Additionally to the compulsory courses in the major, students must complete a minimum of 9 credits from one of the emphasis areas listed below in addition to the major requirements.

Interior Architecture and Design (IARDBS) is a major that is offered to around 40 students who are selected to progress to the Second Year.   • After passing the Design Scenario, students go to the next semester. The studio course sequence requires all majors in the program to receive at least a C in order to progress to a higher level of study (i.e.,INTD 210,INTD 276,INTD 310,INTD 376,INTD 410). Internships are required for students to earn 12 credits before they may graduate. Alternative experiences for students who are unable to engage in an internship include study abroad, elective courses, and independent study (service learning) with consent from their adviser. Students must complete a minimum of 9 credits from one of the following concentration areas in addition to the necessary courses for the major. It is possible to use these credits to meet requirements for a certificate or minor, interdisciplinary minor, second major, or a concentrated collection of courses approved by an adviser.
